GRE Private Tutoring

Unsure of your GRE level?

Prep for the NEW GRE Revised General Test with a Kaplan private tutor. Your tutor will tailor the GRE lessons to your needs based upon your specifications and the results of your diagnostic test. Kaplan offers 3 types of packages to best meet your schedule and your needs:

The 15-hour package is designed to target a student’s weakness in a particular subject area. In addition to the 15 hours that you will have with your teacher, you’ll have homework to prepare both before and after each session. Ideally the tutoring hours should be spread over one month. With this package, you will have the freedom to invest more time in your own preparation outside of the tutoring sessions.

The 25-hour package allows you to learn and practice important GRE strategies with a Kaplan expert, for all content covered in the GRE. With your teacher you’ll be able to target your weaknesses and improve your overall score. The 25-hour package is typically spread over 2 months in order to allow sufficient time for taking practice tests and using the online resources.

The 35-hour package is ideal for students who need a study rhythm that is adapted to their busy lifestyle. Your professor will teach you the Kaplan strategies and methods in detail around your work schedule. With this package, you will have more time to ask your teacher questions. This package is ideal for students who wish to take the GRE in the coming quarter.

Test Overview

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide US graduate schools with a common measure for comparing their applicants’ qualifications. The exam does not test specific subject knowledge and instead measures quantitative, verbal and analytical writing skills. You will be required to take the GRE if you wish to go on to graduate (post-graduate) study in the US.

GRE Test Format

Verbal Section (Two Sections)

Time/section: 30 minutes
Format: apporx. 20 questions
TopicsTested: Reading, Analytical Reasoning, Vocabulary
QuestionTypes: Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, Reading Comprehension (with increased focus on short passages)

Quantitative Section (Two Sections)

Time/section: 35 minutes
Format: approx. 20 questions
TopicsTested: Basic Math, Mathematical Concepts, Quantitative Reasoning
QuestionTypes: Problem Solving, Quantitative Comparisons, Data interpretation

Writing Assessment

Time/section: 60 minutes

GRE Test Score

Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will be given a "scaled score" within a range of 130-170 for both the quantitative and verbal sections in one point increments. You will also receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.

A percentile rank will be given in addition to scaled scores. Your performance will be calculated relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers, giving you a percentile rank. This means that if you scored higher than 60% of GRE test takers you scored in the 60th percentile.

Register for the official test

As the GRE is a computerized test it is available throughout the year. You register for the GRE with the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The most convenient way to find a testing center and register is online at www.gre.org.

There will be a discount 50% fee reduction in August & September 2011. Currently the cost to take the exam in the US $160. To take the exam outside the US the cost is $170. ETS takes most major credit cards.
